G E RICE
Idiosyncratic
Paintings
(Bude, Cornwall, b1946 - d2024)
A closet Cornishman, Geoffrey Rice, recalls short lived " careers" in forestry, waste disposal, catering, landscape gardening and deckchair administration; all grist to the mill for this hard bitten autodidact, who draws succour from the absurd, the humdrum and the occasionally erotic in modern life. Spasmodic outbursts of creativity have produced sundry works of an idiosyncratic nature; fanciful pub signs, anthropomorphic stones, bas-relief plaster images and paintings. Various exhibitions have done little to extend his reputation beyond the small coterie of local cognoscenti who, although loyal and enthusiastic live in fear of his bouts of spontaneous unsolicited gifting!
